WOODS CROSS -- Fighting strong winds and unpredictable balls, the Woods Cross tennis team blew out Roy to win their first region match 5-0 on Tuesday. "They're a very good team," said new head coach Joe Cowley. "I'd venture to say they're one of the best teams Woods Cross has ever seen."

In singles games Cowley defeated Lamb 6-1, 6-0, Hughes defeated Martinez 6-0, 6-1, and Horn defeated Saxton 6-0, 6-0. In doubles Keller, Ericksen defeated Pealer, Curtis 6-1, 6-3, and Davis, Ernst defeated Salazar, Funk 6-3, 6-1.

"I was especially impressed with the singles players," said Cowley. "Our seniors pretty much keep the team going."

The team will face five more region matches before regional and then state play-offs. Woods Cross recently won third place in the St. George High School Challenge Cup, a 16-team tournament held in southern Utah.
