BOUNTIFUL -- The Viewmont Lady Vikings volleyball team is coming off a 2003 campaign in which it won the state title.
The Davis Lady Darts are arguably the Vikings' chief athletic rival and a tough Region One opponent year in and year out.
Both squared off against each other this past Tuesday in Bountiful in both schools' first region match of the season.
Although the Lady Darts proved to be a scrappy bunch, Viewmont took the match in three straight games 25-19, 25-13 and 25-23.
Ariel Salvo and Micah Lines led the Lady Vikings. They both seemed to be all over the court in leading the Lady Vikings to an early 1-0 Region One record.
The first game was a tight gone as the Lady Vikings depended on their big two to nudge them to victory. Behind Lines' great serving and Salvo's clutch killing, Viewmont broke a 13-13 tie and outscored the Lady Darts 12-6 to close out the first game at 25-19.
The second game was all Viewmont. Davis helped the Lady Vikings out in this second game also as they routinely gave Viewmont easy points on badly hit shots. Davis' Kayla Walker was the main weapon for the Lady Darts. She tried keeping the Lady Darts competitive throughout the entire match, but it wasn't enough against Viewmont.
Lines came out in the third game and quickly served the Lady Vikings to an early 5-1 lead.
It looked as though the third game would end up like the second game, but Davis would have none of that.
The Lady Vikings' Cidney Judkins also got her serve on and helped Viewmont extend their lead to 9-2. Lines continued to impress as she recorded numerous kills to give Viewmont their only double-digit lead of the whole match at 16-6.
The third game was the closest, with Viewmont coming out on top 25-23, completing the sweep.
