WOODS CROSS -- The Woods Cross football team needed a win in the worst way Friday. Luckily for the Wildcats, some miserable weather and the mistake-prone Bonneville Lakers were the remedy as the Wildcats captured a 13-7 victory. The win was the first in Region 5 for Woods Cross, while improving the locals to 3-4 on the season.

The Woods Cross defense shined as Chandler Newsome paced the Wildcat running game with 68 yards and the deciding touchdown in the fourth quarter.

"The way things have gone these past four weeks, it has been hard," Woods Cross coach Fred Fernandes said. "We needed this win pretty bad after four tough weeks."

Bonneville drove the field on its opening possession and was abruptly stopped short at the Woods Cross 5-yard line when Jonathan Feller intercepted a Spencer Unga pass. Feller brought the ball out to the Wildcat 32-yard line. Feller picked up his second interception of the game after the Lakers had driven inside the Woods Cross 20-yard line.

Bonneville's drive was the only offense of note in the first half for either team.

The Lakers took the opening kickoff of the second half and moved the ball down field to take a 7-0 lead. Bonneville rushed the ball for all eight of its plays during the 80-yard drive.

Woods Cross used a similar philosophy on the ensuing drive as they rushed the ball seven times while the one pass play was a 12-yard touchdown to Chris Haning from quarterback Jordan Smith. The seven rushes accounted for 37 yards of the drive while a 30-yard unsportsmanlike penalty against Bonneville helped the Wildcat drive.

After a mishandled long snap, Woods Cross took over at the Bonneville 2-yard line. Newsome punched the ball in for the Wildcat lead that stood the final nine minutes of the game.

"We told the kids all week that it was going to be raining and that the team with the least number of mental mistakes was going to win this one," Fernandes said. "I feel real fortunate that we got that punt. You take what you can get in games like this and we capitalized on it."

The top five teams out of Region 5 will make it to the playoffs. If the Wildcats can win their final two games they will qualify for the state playoffs.
