The city planning commission recently approved the final site plan for the UTOPIA hub that will be the main service center for the city's fiber optic cable network.
Once in place, residents can use the network to receive high speed Internet, phone and TV services from a variety of providers.
Though Centerville hasn't been given a specific date for the start of construction, Centerville Finance Director Blaine Lutz expects it to be sometime this summer.
"They're getting some engineering work done," said Lutz. "Hopefully parts of the city should be up and running on the network by the end of the year."
Construction will include work on the hub, the network itself, and five smaller stations to service different areas of the city. Once a station is completed, service can begin in that area immediately.
A list of Internet, phone and TV providers who will be using the network is available on UTOPIA's Web site, www.utopianet.org. Lutz says that more marketing on the possibilities of the network will be made available once construction begins.
Though fiberoptic cable only appreciably increases the speed of Internet service, it has a much higher capacity than current cable and can handle several services through the same connection.
