KAYSVILLE - There were no surprises in the Region 1 track and field championships last week. The favorites steamrolled to victory as Viewmont took the boys title and Davis repeated for the girls. Through the boys' season, no one has been able to knock the Vikings off in region competition, but Davis gave it their best shot. The major battle occurred in the field events where both teams have excelled. For the Darts, Spencer Hall took a school record in the discus that has stood for years. It has been a mark that Hall has been trying to reach all year and he got it when it counted the most. Alex Hill also took the javelin title as well with a throw of 164 feet. But with every top place, the Vikings were there with strong finishes, helped by Ryker Morgan winning the high jump by four inches.
Viewmont made their move in the sprint events. The Vikings were led by Marshall Milligan as he took the 100- meter dash by being the only athlete to break the 11-second barrier on that day. Also the 4x400 team set a meet record, breaking the old mark by almost two seconds.
Though Davis tried to hold on, Viewmont took the event by a substantial amount and also ended Davis' streak of 10 straight region championships.
"It wasn't like we had a bad day," Davis coach Roger Buhrley said. "We did good, but Viewmont just had a great meet."
After the Davis Invitational, Buhrley thought the only way for the Davis girls to lose was to beat themselves.
The Lady Darts did not beat themselves and were untouchable as they flattened the competition by scoring over 200 points for the entire event.
Ashlee Cannon and Candace Eddy continued to advance to a possible state titles. Cannon also grabbed some history as she reset another state record, her second in two weeks, when she lowered the 110-meter hurdle to 14.45 seconds. Eddy also maintained a stranglehold on her opposition as she won both the 1600 and the 3200 meters. She still has not been beaten by any athlete in Utah.
Davis also has some of the best throwers in the state and they finished atop both events. Alayna Ferrin and Allison Dunford were within one foot of each other as they finished one and two in shot put. Kelsie Eller, Jordan Harris, and Leslee Hyer took the top spots in the javelin.
Now all the attention turns to the State championships this weekend and although Davis is the defending champion, Coach Buhrley knows they have their backs against the wall with heavy competition from the boys.
"There could be eight or nine teams that are in it," Buhrley explained. "We feel that we have a chance and that is all we can ask for."
As far as the girls' championships are concerned, Buhrley wants a safe approach to this last week of practice.
"The girls just need to maintain where they are and avoid injuries or setbacks."
With the girls having one title set, they can now look for more while Viewmont and Davis look for one more battle for the boys' title.
