One of the topmost concerns for hospital patients is emotional well being, and Davis Hospital has joined the ranks of medical buildings that use wireless communication to encourage patients to keep that emotional well being up to par.
One of the main concerns for the Davis County area is that patients keep in touch with family members. Now, due partially to the requests of patients and visitors, the wireless Internet will allow e-mail and instant messaging inside a patient's room.
Medical institutions have been moving toward wireless accessibility in recent years, and Davis Hospital's own wireless network has been in the works for a couple of years. The hospital says that the wireless Internet's main purpose is for patients to keep in touch with family, to be able to keep up on work, and also for entertainment purposes.
"There are many hospitals and medical centers moving toward that technology," said Community Relations Director, Lora Kier. Throughout the last year, Davis Hospital has actually had patient and visitor requests for a wireless system.
Davis Hospital CEO, Michael Jensen also said in a written statement that since the patient population has become much more computer literate, there is a need for wireless communication.
It is a technology that hospitals everywhere are trying to establish in order to satisfy their patients' needs to keep in touch with family members and keep up on any work-related issues. Medical institutions are rarely short in the running for advanced technology. It only took two years for Davis Hospital to complete its own wireless project.
"Within the first two hours, we had many people already using the wireless system," said Kier. The system is available to any person carrying a laptop computer.
While patients and visitors can access the Web inside the hospital, they cannot access the hospital network, which Davis says is on a completely different system. "This is a completely different system, and there is no possibility of access into patient records and other sensitive files," said Jensen in a written statement. Security issues were one of the main topics discussed by the IS and Administration departments while deciding to develop the wireless Internet system. After discussions and requests for about a year, the departments gave the go-ahead and began development on the system.
Davis Hospital expects the wireless Internet to be very widely used. "I think it has been popular and will continue to be very popular," said Kier.
The wireless communication system is available in patient rooms, waiting areas and dining areas.
