Vikings to host first playoff game in almost 20 years

This is new territory for the Viewmont Vikings. They have-n't hosted a home playoff game since the 80s, which was also the last time they finished as high as second in region play. Their reward -- a West Jordan team that is ranked in the top five in the state and that played in a tough Region 3. The Vikes wrapped up second place in Region 1 last Wednesday with a convincing win over Layton. Quarterback Greg Madsen accounted for what has be-come his usual four touchdowns with a combination of running and passing.

Viewmont's defense will be put to the test, as the Jaguars bring a vaunted running game that ran over Davis earlier in the year for more than 400 yards and have two rushers in the top 10 in the state.

The Vikes haven't lost since September, winning their past three games by wide margins.

Darts on the outside looking in

The Davis Darts have the ignominious distinction of becoming the first team since Orem in the early 90s to miss the playoffs one year after winning a state championship.

If they could have beat Northridge last Wednesday they would have punched their ticket, but a field goal attempt as time expired left them on the outside looking in.

Braves face familiar foe

The Bountiful Braves capped off a great regular season with a win over Roy last Wednesday.

The Braves finished the season an impressive 8-2, with their only losses coming against Mountain Crest and Lone Peak, who are a combined 16-2, and who both won their respective regions.

A second-place finish and eight wins might be a satisfying season for some teams, but tradition demands more from these Braves in the post season to consider the season a success.

They play a tough Orem team this Friday at home. It is the same team they beat last year in the first round of the playoffs, only last time they were in Orem.

Wildcats finish fifth

The Woods Cross Wildcats lost a chance at finishing .500 for the season, and more importantly, the fourth seed in Region 5 with a loss to Box Elder last Wednesday.

The 'Cats are in the playoffs, nonetheless, and are excited about their matchup with former Region 5 opponent High-land.

The Wildcats were able to beat Region 5 bottom dwellers Bonneville and Roy, but lost close contests with Bountiful and Sky View.

If Woods Cross could have pulled off those two games they would have finished in second place.

Clearfield, Northridge in, but Layton left out

Clearfield began the season 0-4, but put the pieces together in time to finish tied with Viewmont for second place in Region 1 by winning their last four games.

They have the third seed because of a tie-break with the Vikings and travel to play 8-1 Hunter this Friday.

The Knights' win over Davis gave them a playoff berth, and their reward is to play undefeated Bingham, while Layton lost a chance at the playoffs.
