FARMINGTON -- This year's Davis County "Hometown Military Heroes" Gala did a lot more than fill stomachs with quality food. Many outstanding Veterans and still-serving members of the military were honored. And along the way, more than $100,000 was raised to support Hill Air Force Base. Those funds, which will go toward purchasing exercise equipment to be housed in the base's new Hess Fitness Center were donated by Davis County Commissioners, Tuesday.

In addition to Commission Chairman Carol Page and Commissioner Alan Hansen, Commissioner Dannie McConkie attended via telephone hookup. Also on hand were Debra Tanzi, Layton, who coordinated Gala efforts, Mayor Fred Panucci of Syracuse, chairman of the Council of Governments, and Col. Scott Chambers, commander of the 75th Air Base Wing at HAFB.

"We're so pleased to be able to show support for the fighting men and women of our military services with this donation, made possible by the great support from the businesses and individuals in our community who helped sponsor this year's Gala," said Page.

"Military personnel must remain in good shape to perform the duties they are called upon to perform, and those who have been injured or wounded need this to help in their rehabilitation," said McConkie.

About 762 guests attended the gala held at the Davis Conference Center in Layton in September, said Kent Sulser, who helped coordinate the program.

The major purpose of this third annual gala was to pay tribute to the men and women of local communities who have served and now serve in the military.

"We are just thrilled with the response from the community to this event, which made it possible to raise more than $100,000," Tanzi said.

"The Davis COG was a major sponsor, and it is just so appropriate that this group, with representation from all of our communities, will be purchasing and donating this equipment for the fitness center."

The center was recently completed with Air Force Funds. It has not been opened for use because of a lack of equipment.

There was not adequate money to purchase equipment for the facility, which receives heavy use from Air Force personnel. Many of them are required to make use of the facility to maintain a physical condition necessary to remain in combat readiness.

"We are pleased to help support this tribute to these great men and women who serve us and the wold," said Panucci, CCOG chairman.

"All of our mayors know what an important part HAFB and our military personnel play in our communities."
