FARMINGTON -- Accused murderer retired Air Force Lt. Col. Richard Stuart Carlson now has an attorney. Carlson, 52, of Layton is charged with first-degree felony murder and second-degree felony obstructing justice in the death of his wife Joanne, in February at their home. Last week, 2nd District Court Judge Michael Allphin assigned public defender Bill Albright to the case, saying the court had waited long enough for Carlson to retain an attorney. Carlson was trying to get his retirement checks turned over to a private attorney to represent him. Attorneys Greg Skordas and later Aric Cramer both withdrew from the case citing financial considerations. Allphin said the county will place a lien on Carlson's income to pay back money owed for the public defender. mwilliams@davisclipper.com
