Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators at first didn't know if Sanders had jumped or had been pushed, but determined she jumped.
The driver of the car Sanders was riding in, John Earl Osbourne, also of Richmond, appeared in 2nd District Court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol with prior offenses, giving false information to police, driving on a suspended or revoked license, circumventing an ignition interlock system and violating a no-alcohol conditional license. He was also wanted out of 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City on a $100,000 warrant on another case.
Man will serve 35-to-life in prison
FARMINGTON --A man convicted of rape and sodomy of a child will wind up serving at least 35-years-to-life in the Utah State Prison.
Carl Gene Lee, 50, was sentenced to serve three sentences of 10 years to life, one sentence of five years to life and one sentence of one to 15 years, for sexually abusing a girl for six years.
The case was handled through the state attorney general's office because Lee claimed the girl was related to Deputy Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings. While prosecutors say there is no relationship, it was easier for them to turn the case over to the state.
Lee's trial took place in July. At that time the victim took the stand, saying she had been abused by Lee from the time she was 7 until she was 14. Assistant Attorney General Ann Rozycki said the jury clearly believed the victim's testimony. They deliberated less than an hour before returning the guilty verdict.
Rozycki asked Hansen to sentence Lee to consecutive sentences because he demonstrated no acceptance of responsibility or empathy for what happened. She noted it was a particularly egregious case because of the age of the victim and the time span in which the abuse took place.
While the three, 10-years-to-life sentences and the five-years-to-life sentence will be consecutive, the one-to-15-year sentence will be served concurrently with the five-year-to-life sentence.
Still, Rozycki was pleased with the outcome, saying justice had been served.
