BOUNTIFUL -- Construction at the South Davis Recreation Center is underway, but the exact size of the building is still undetermined. While the Bountiful building was originally planned to be 165,000 square feet, the size of the structure had to be scaled back to 140,000 square feet thanks to skyrocketing transportation costs, Bountiful City Manager Tom Hardy said. Although Hardy said "most people will be elated with what happens" at the recreation center, there still are some who would like to see the recreation center built at its originally planned size.

Among those who would like a bigger pool at the recreation center is Woods Cross city council member Rick Earnshaw.

At the last South Davis Recreation Board meeting, Earnshaw suggested that the money needed to build a bigger pool in the recreation center could be divided up between the five communities in the South Davis area. While no definite plans have been made, Hardy said that if a larger pool is to be built, commitments need to be made soon.

"If we don't hear within the next month, then there is no possibility of making the pool bigger," Hardy said.

Many of those who hope for a larger pool are concerned that the pool being built won't be large enough for competition, Hardy said.

If Bountiful, Centerville, North Salt Lake, West Bountiful and Woods Cross do agree to fund the addition to the pool, it would cost approximately $1 million to enlarge it, Hardy said.

While plans for the pool enlargement are up in the air, most aspects of the building have already been pinned down, Hardy said.

Hogan Construction has been chosen to be the construction manager at the recreation center. The company has contracted out certain projects to other companies and continues to do so, Hardy said.

The complex, which will include an ice sheet and a gymnasium, is scheduled to be completed in October 2006.
