On Bountiful's opening drive, the Braves moved the ball from their 46 to the Lakers 19. However, a pass intended for Cullen Clark was intercepted in the end zone by Laker Nick Clarke to end the scoring threat.
Unable to move the ball, Bonneville punted, pinning the Braves on their one-yard line. Bonneville's Jim Eskelsen tackled a Brave runner in the end zone for a safety and a two-point lead.
Bonneville's next possession resulted in a 43-yard scoring strike from Cotton Land to Mathew Holbrook. With the converted PAT, the Lakers were up 9--0 with 3:43 left in the first quarter.
"Their interception really gave them the momentum. We wanted to control the ball, establish our game plan and score some early points," said coach Wall. "They got that safety and scored one on our D but our kids stayed calm and they continue to believe in themselves."
In the second quarter, Bountiful put together an impressive 80-yard drive for their first score of the night. A 16-yard reception from Jason Maughan to Mitch Johnson, an 11-yard reverse by Joey Nelson and strong running by Jamie Rigby led to the one-yard touchdown run by Johnson. Ammon
Schwab added the extra point to get the Braves to within two at 9 - 7.
Bountiful's Nelson intercepted a Bonneville pass at the Laker 42. Following the strong blocking of Ben Aird, Phil Arismendi, Darren Denucci, Cory Ford, Dan Kidd and Jarom Ioane (who later left the game due to an injury), Johnson and Rigby ran the ball to the two where Johnson scored his second touchdown of the night. With nine seconds re-maining in the half, Schwab converted the PAT and the Braves were in command 14--9.
The second half was a defensive struggle and the Braves came up with several defensive stops. Nelson made his second pick of the night, Brandon Beck and Clark had quarterback sacks and Dereck Wolfe recovered a Laker fumble. Beck also recovered a Laker fumble which helped set up Schwab's 25-yard field goal.
"I felt good coming out for the second half," said Wall. "Our defense stepped it up and our secondary played great. Those were key interceptions. Tonga (Toko), our middle backer did an excellent job tonight as did Clark at defensive end. Rigby also played well on both sides of the ball. This entire team has a lot of heart."
Rigby ended the game with 26 carries and 176 total yards of offense.
Bountiful (4--0, 1--0) hosts Box Elder (2 -2, 0--1) Friday night as region play continues. The Bees come into the game following a 46--28 loss to Sky View.
