WOODS CROSS -- The closer the prize, the more painful it is to let go.

In a tough game, the Woods Cross boys tennis team came within inches of having two Utah 4A state finalists. In the first singles, Wildcat Matt Cowley seemed to be overmatched after dropping his first set to Orem's AJ Young, 6-2. After re-grouping, though, Cowley proved his mettle by fighting off elimination and capturing a grueling 7-6 set, forcing a third and decisive match. Young outgunned Cowley, sending the Wood Cross player packing with an impressive 6-0 win.

Cowley's teammate Michael Hughes (second singles) then ran into eventual state champion Cal Larson of Timpview. Larson defeated Michael Hughes of Woods Cross 6-1, 6-2.

Despite the losses, Woods Cross tennis coach Joe Cowley sees positive results from his players.

"Woods Cross had four teams that qualified for state, and all four won their first-round match," he said. Taylor Horn and doubles team Isac Ernest and Alex Davis also competed in state.

"As a team, that's probably the most impressive state turnout we've ever had."

Bountiful's Tom Taylor also made it past his first round, beating out Steven Swan from Payson. In the second round he lost to Highland's Devon Lane, who went on to become the state champion.
