KAYSVILLE -- For the very first time ever, the Davis County Department of Health -- in observing older Americans month -- sponsored a senior gala night for seniors all around the county, focusing on the theme, "Those Were the Days." The Davis County Department of Health decided to hold the gala for seniors to get together and participate in one of the favorite activities that was more available 50 years ago: dancing. "What a treat it is for them to be able to hear their era of music," said Director of Davis County Aging Services, Sally Kershisnik. The gala was held in the commons at Davis High School in Kaysville. The DHS Moonlight Serenaders played, sang and danced to big band music from the 30s and 40s.

"We were very lucky to get them to play tonight and very lucky to be able to come to the school," said Kershisnik.

Seniors from the north, middle and south end of Davis County ate, danced and socialized while a South Weber youth group served food and cleared tables.

"It's wonderful to be able to come out tonight," said Bountiful resident Karen Tate. She and her husband, Terry, were with Keith and Pat Barton, other Bountiful residents. They all said they would definitely be joining the group again next year.

"We have had tremendous support for this," said Kershisnik.

Professional photographers were available for couple and group photos, and prizes were given away during a sort of raffle. Sponsors varied from Chuck-a-rama to Apple Tree Retirement Homes. Youth groups from around the valley made corsages, tablecloths and centerpieces for each table.

Kershisnik said there will definitely be more galas in the future.

"It's just a good opportunity," she said.
