Each year, the celebration uses a worship service developed by women from a different country. Women in 170 countries will observe the day. This year, the worship service was developed by women from nine churches in Poland.
They take the service from the words Jesus spoke at the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:7: "Let your light shine," and ask participants to visualize themselves in a country where war is a daily terror, or a country recovering from past devastation, or a fledgling country, like Poland, where the country's constitution is only eight years old.
The service also asks that women look at the role of women in countries where they have only a limited education, where the economy is agrarian and food is a daily challenge.
In Salt Lake County, the service will be March 4 at Mountain Vista United Methodist Church, 8931 S. 3200 South, in West Jordan. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the program at 10 a.m. Cost is $1.
The service will also be held in Ogden on March 5, at the First United Methodist Church, 2604 Jefferson Ave. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10 a.m. Light refreshments will follow. Cost is $2.
Church Women United is a racially, culturally and theologically inclusive ecumenical Christian women's movement, celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice.
All interested women are invited.
