BOUNTIFUL -- Downtown Main Street is one step closer to becoming a bit more European. During Tuesday's Bountiful City Council meeting, city council members strongly approved the development plan for the old Clipper building site.

John Hepworth, owner and developer of the property, presented his plan with enthusiasm.

"I am excited to discuss what we've planned," Hepworth began. "We think this kind of development will be contagious for the rest of the street."

Hepworth's plan for this spot is to construct buildings for fine retail development, bringing more businesses to Bountiful.

Beyond bringing in new businesses, Hepworth hopes the buildings will add a classic international touch, while ushering in a more modern-looking Main Street.

"We've really added to the store fronts and windows," Hepworth said. "We were inspired to add a French touch. We'd like to see French store fronts and accent points that include French balconies."

Beyond adding a European feel, Hepworth borrowed ideas from popular cities throughout the United States, such as Boston.

During the meeting, it was pointed out that some of the entrance canopies are similar to the famous canopy on television's popular sitcom Cheers.

Beyond bringing in design elements from around the globe, Hepworth met with Bountiful's Historic Commission to ensure that an essence of history remained.

"We want to mimic the historical aspects of the street and community," he said, "while adding some flavor. We really want this to become a timeless street."

"We're even so bold to say that we hope this development will bring national recognition," Hepworth continued. "We think this development will add a lot of class and bring activity to the area."

And the city council agreed.

"We are very grateful that you and your family are so interested in developing this area," Mayor Joe Johnson said. "We think that this will be a first-class development for downtown Bountiful."

"This plan has the kind of feel we're looking for," said Tom Tolman, city council member. "It has many historical elements with a touch of modern elements."

Beyond businesses, the buildings will also include apartments, which begin at 1,100 square feet, with the largest being 1,500 square feet.

"These apartments will be very nice, attracting the type of residents who want to live in this atmosphere."

The old Clipper building was demolished last summer, and the Whisperwood Hollow building was leveled last month, making room for the development.

With the city council's approval of the plan, construction on the site will begin soon.
