SALT LAKE CITY -- The six-time Grammy Award- winning band, The Chieftains, was in Utah last weekend to perform with the Utah Symphony in Abravanel Hall. The Chieftains are a 43-year-old institution often referred to as "Ireland's premiere musical ambassadors." Their program is an energetic mix of instrumentals, including Uileann pipes and bagpipes; traditional Irish folk performed in its own unique style; drums; and Riverdance-style folk dances.

The vibrant, Celtic music was made even more colorful by the addition of the Woods Cross High School Madrigals under the direction of Neil Hendriksen.

The choir came on stage for the second half of the two-and-a-half-hour show to sing two numbers with The Chieftains and the symphony.

The 12-woman, 14-man ensemble was poised and professional in their tender rendition of "Shenandoah."

This is not the first time the choir has been invited to sing with the symphony. They performed during the 2003 holiday season and Hendriksen had the unique opportunity to conduct the choir and symphony in one of the numbers, an unprecedented "first" for the symphony.
