The Vikings found out how tough a season sweep is this past Thursday as they played to a 0-0 double overtime draw with the Lancers in Layton. The tie was a big blow for the Vikings because the Davis Darts leapfrogged them in the Region 1 standings for second place with a win over last place Clearfield.
Layton still remains atop the league standings with a 6-1-2 (20 pts.) mark. Davis is now just two points behind at 6-2 (18 pts.) with Viewmont following closely in third at 5-3-1 (16 pts.). Rounding out the standings is Fremont (4-4, 12 pts.), Weber (3-3, 9 pts.), Northridge (2-6, 6 pts.) and Clearfield (0-7-1, 1 pt.).
Weber lost their third in a row against Fremont on Thursday and is now in danger of defending their 2004 state title as the five seed out of the state's toughest soccer region.
Alex Ipson was again the goalie with the shutout for the Vikings. Viewmont sports a suffocating team defense. They don't score a lot of goals as Layton does, but they showed Thursday that the old saying "a good defense always beats a good offense" could very well be true.
Both clubs had their chances in regulation, but neither could convert. Both the Lancers and Vikings had shots glance off the other's cross bar, with nothing falling down into the net.
Weber surely will be out of this week's top-five rankings with their two losses last week. Davis will be moving up from their number four spot while Viewmont could very well sneak back into the top five where they were for much of the early part of this season. The Vikings' overall record is 8-3-1 while Layton is now 8-1-3 and Davis is 8-2-1.
There are no Region 1 games scheduled this week. But, Weber has played only six league games so far because of a couple of postponements and might very well make up some earlier lost games this week. That could prove to be huge for the Warriors and the Vikings.
Right now, Weber has only the three losses and could easily salvage the season if they can stay at the three losses. Three losses at the end of the year would be good enough for third place in Region 1. That's also assuming that Davis or Layton don't reach that three-loss plateau like all the other Region 1 squads.
Viewmont has their destiny in their own hands right now. If they can continue to play the way they are right now and perhaps win out the remainder of their games, it will be very difficult for Weber, or Fremont, to overtake them for third place.
The final two weeks of Region 1 soccer are just about upon us and the stretch run is looking like it will be a real barnburner.
