May 5 set for groundbreaking

KAYSVILLE -- A 10 a.m. May 5 time has been set for groundbreaking ceremonies of the Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Entrepreneurial Center at the Davis Applied Technology College (DATC), 500 E. 300 S., Kaysville. The 10,000-square-foot center will provide a place for young, growing businesses to grow and develop. It is hoped that jobs and technology will be developed in partnership with the DATC and eventually they can move to their own facilities. The Simmonses and other donors will be honored for their support. Donations are still being accepted with more information available by calling Franciska Meacham at 593-2374.



Kaysville to salute Arbor Day, April 30

KAYSVILLE -- The City of Kaysville will hold its annual Arbor Day celebration Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m., on the grounds of city hall, Center and Main streets.

LaVar Godfrey, who was involved with the city's tree program for many years, will share his thoughts and stories about some of the trees in Kaysville. The program is part of Andrew Clark's Eagle Scout project.



Clearfield sets Arbor Day event

CLEARFIELD -- Clearfield will be observing its 10th annual Arbor Day observance Friday, April 29, 2 p.m. at the Community Center Little Theatre, 140 E. Center. The city has been declared a Tree City USA for 10 straight years, the 16th city in the state to receive such an honor, of which only 38 are so designated.

The State Urban Forestry Department will be on hand along with students from Hill Field, Holt and Wasatch elementary schools who will be recognized for winning Arbor Day poster designs. Theme was "Trees are Terrific and Energy Wise."



Child abuser given five-year sentence

FARMINGTON -- Cody Alan Baker, who was found guilty of child abuse was sentenced to up to five years in the Utah State Prison on Tuesday,

Baker, who was found guilty of two counts of child abuse after he intentionally sat on his 30-month- old son's leg when the baby would not stop crying and threw the baby in his crib, causing the child to hit his head on the crib's metal frame. The child suffered a hemorrhage to his right eye and swelling and water on the brain.

After the incident, Baker and his wife took the infant to Davis Hospital and Medical Center. Then, the Division of Child and Family Services filed a civil petition in 2nd District Juvenile Court accusing Baker of abuse.
