CENTERVILLE --The quiet of a Centerville neighborhood was disturbed and a pipe bomb diffused last Thursday in what started as a traffic stop. A Bountiful police officer attempted to pull over a car for speeding while northbound on 400 East, according to Lt. Steve Gray. Instead of complying, the 17-year-old driver sped away leading the officer on a high speed chase. Gray said the officer called the chase off because it became dangerous, but the officer followed behind at the posted speed limit. As the motorist went through the intersection of Chase Lane and 400 East, he crashed into a curb. The driver and a passenger ran. At that point Centerville Police were called in and chased the suspects into fields to the west. They were able to catch one suspect, but the other got away. The Bountiful officer examined the car and found an explosive device in the glove box. At that point, four homes in the area were evacuated and Davis County Sheriff's Department bomb technicians were called in to defuse the device.
