BOUNTIFUL --The Viewmont softball team brought their bats Thursday in bouncing back from their first round loss to Skyline with a 10-0, five-inning victory over the Clearfield Falcons in the bottom half of the state tournament.
The Vikings pounded out 11 hits, led by Shasta Tyteca's three hits and three runs scored, including the game ending run. Clearfield didn't help their cause at all by committing six errors that led to four Vikings runs.
The game was scoreless until the third inning, when Viewmont got on the board. Tyteca singled to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by Krystal Shergrud.
After Clearfield committed an error, Mandi Wilding doubled home the first run of the game. Clearfield's second error of the inning allowed another run to score. That was followed by Amanda Sarle's RBI groundout to put the Vikings up 3-0. Viewmont continued to put pressure on the Falcons by scoring four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.
Not to be lost in this game was the stellar pitching performance by Sarle. The sophomore threw five shutout innings, struck out three while allowing six hits and walking one.
She also did a nice job pitching out of a jam in the fifth inning, when the first two Clearfield batters reached base. She struck out the next batter and got the next batter to line into an inning-ending double play. And if her pitching performance wasn't enough, she drove in two runs with her bat.
When asked what the difference was between this game and the two games against Clearfield earlier this season (which they split), Viewmont coach Tiffany Randall said the key to this game was the relentless offensive pressure her club put on the Falcons by putting the ball in play.
"We hit hard from the beginning of the game and never let up. We only had one strikeout."
Viewmont will play Fremont on Tuesday at 3:15.
