KAYSVILLE -- While Wal-Mart faces woes in Centerville, the chain's Layton store, Wal-Mart number 1699, is handing out money to local school teachers for their efforts in the classroom.
Scott Hughes, a fourth- grade teacher at Kaysville Elementary School, was named Layton Wal-Mart's Teacher-of-the-Year. That distinction earned him a check for $1,000 from the superstore.
Recently, Hughes accepted the check from two Wal-Mart representatives in front of his delighted students. The students clapped and cheered and were very excited for Mr. Hughes.
Students had a lot to say. "I think we should use the $1,000. on books and Accelerated Reader (AR) quizzes because I love to read," said Zach Santella. Anna Humphrey agreed. "I think Mr. Hughes really deserved the check because he is the best teacher. We should use the money on books," she said.
The funds are for use at Kaysville Elementary. Hughes said the monies will buy AR quizzes that all students can access. The librarian is assisting Hughes to determine which tests the school needs. The balance of the money will be spent on projects the school needs.
When asked to comment about the award, Hughes said he was happy with his students and this school year. "Thanks to my great students. Also, thanks to Wal-Mart for sponsoring this recognition program. I shop there all the time anyway, so it was a surprise to have Wal-Mart writing me a check." he said.
A parent nominated Hughes for the honor through Wal-Mart's "Good Works" program that recognizes excellence in communities. The nomination was anonymous so no one in the school knows who did it. Hughes was selected "Teacher-of-the-Year" because of his ability to weave community service into his daily instruction. He has organized canned food drives, book donations, and other projects that keep his students focused on the community needs around them. "I want my students to know that they can make a difference," says Hughes.
Kaysville Elementary and Wal-Mart officials said they want Hughes to know that he makes a difference every day he teaches students. Hughes is now eligible for the state and national Wal-Mart Teacher-of-the-Year awards.
