'Prank' closes W. Bountiful ShopKo
WEST BOUNTIFUL -- Police here let a ShopKo employee off with a slap on the wrist after he allegedly called a bomb threat into the store.
West Bountiful Police Chief Randy Lloyd said police decided to issue the man a couple of misdemeanor citations after interviewing him and determining the man "just thought he was being funny."
The incident happened Thursday morning, and the store was cleared of all customers for about an hour as officers swept the store. No explosives were found.
Lloyd, who would not identify the suspect, said that once the employee was identified, officers explained the seriousness of the threat to him, and explained they could have called in the FBI and that he could have been charged with a second-degree felony.
Once all that was explained, "He was very humble. He didn't realize how serious such a threat is, especially after 9-11," Lloyd said.
The man has no prior criminal history, Lloyd said.
He said ShopKo may pursue restitution from the man for the hour the store was closed.
