WEST POINT -- West Point Mayor John Petroff Jr., has announced his candidacy for the Davis County Commission seat being vacated by Commissioner Alan Hansen. In a press statement Petroff said, "I firmly believe that the key to our success as a county rests on the ability of the commission to cultivate and maintain solid productive relationships with a number of key groups."

He emphasizes the importance of supporting ongoing growth and development of Hill Air Force Base, promoting job creation through interlocal cooperatives such as the Davis Technology and Economic Cooperative (DTEC), continuing to work with the state to improve transportation, and maintaining a close working relationship with the Davis School District.

He said the commission must be able to work with a variety of groups to elevate the quality of life in Davis County.

Petroff said one of the most valuable things he takes from his experiences as mayor and as a member of the Council of Governments (COG) is his very solid working relationships with Davis mayors. "Our county is very fortunate to have some very fine individuals serving as chief elected officials," says Petroff. "I continue to consider the opportunity to work with them as a very high honor."

Petroff currently serves as the mayor of West Point City, a community of 12,000 in northwest Davis County. He also serves as the chair of both Wasatch Front Regional Council and Wasatch Integrated Waste.

Among Petroff's accomplishments while in office he cites

- Leading a coalition of citizens and community leaders (Utahns for the Legacy Parkway) to end the stalemate with the Sierra Club over the road and begin construction.

- Spearheading a cooperative effort between Clearfield, West Point, and Syracuse to bring high-tech jobs to Davis County via the creation of the Davis Technology and Economic Cooperative (DTEC).

- Working with state planning and transportation officials to expand and improve roads in Davis County, including I-15, SR 108, and SR 193.

- Leading a successful effort to consolidate fire and emergency medical services in northwest Davis County leading to the formation of the North Davis Fire District.

- Representing Davis County on a regional basis to secure responsible landfill options for residents now and into the future.

- Ensuring no city property tax increases in West Point for six years. The West Point budget has experienced surpluses every year during his administration and currently the city boasts one of the lowest property tax rates at .000834.

- Presiding over the greatest expansion of economic and infrastructure development in West Point's history.

For the past 27 years Petroff has been the proprietor of JP's American Car Care Center and is an active member of the Davis Chamber of Commerce, where he has also served as a board member. He currently sits on the North Davis Sewer Board and the North Davis Fire Board.
