BOUNTIFUL -- Pull out your swimming suit, find your ice skates and come play at Bountiful's state-of-the-art recreation center.

The Rec Center is holding its grand opening celebration on Saturday, April 7. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this event.

The celebration will begin with speeches given by Bountiful Mayor Joe Johnson, Rec Center chair, and former county commissioner Mc-Conkie, district vice chair.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow at approximately 10:30 a.m., marking the official opening of the cutting edge facility.

In addition to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, radio station 101.9 The End will be broadcasting live from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will be giving away prizes throughout the day.

The celebration will conclude with a grand finale fireworks show beginning at approximately 8 p.m.

"We really think that this will be a lot of fun," said Shanna Schild, marketing manager for the Rec Center. "We hope the public will come out and enjoy the grand opening."

To celebrate its official opening, the Rec Center will be waiving registration fees throughout the month of April. This is a $30 value.

The following week, Friday, April 13, the Rec Center is holding a skating exhibition on its Olympic-size ice rink. This event is free to the public and will begin at 7 p.m.

The three-level facility was constructed with an $18.4 million bond approved by voters and received an additional $2 million from Davis County.

The Rec Center was originally expected to open in late 2006, but experienced many delays, causing frustration throughout the community.

But, since opening its doors on March 5, the recreational facility has been crowded with residents excited to use the variety of features it offers.

The Rec Center includes an Olympic-size ice arena; a multi-purpose gymnasium that is set up for basketball, volleyball and indoor roller hockey; two indoor pools, with an outdoor splash pad opening for the summer season; five racquetball courts; a weight room; a fitness and dance studio; two party rooms; a bouldering cave, indoor track and more.

"This Rec Center just doesn't compare to the old Rec Center," Miller said. "The crowds are here and the parking lot is full from early morning to late in the evening."
