BOUNTIFUL -- The Bountiful High School Annual Silent Scholarship Auction is a great place to do your Christmas shopping! Airline tickets, restaurant certificates, Jazz tickets, car services, quilts, animal services, mattresses, and much more will be auctioned.

The Auction will be held in the BHS lobby before and after the school musical, "Into the Woods," from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18 and Monday, Nov. 20. (Play begins at 7 p.m.) The earnings will support $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to deserving BHS seniors.

VHS swimmers prevail

BOUNTIFUL -- The Viewmont Viking swim team were in fine form in the early season after the boys and girls both took first place in a meet against Richfield last weekend.

The Vikings took first place in every event except one. The girls were led by Melissa Manser who took first in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly.

The boys received strong performances from Nalu Medeiros who won the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard butterfly, and Aaron Wade, who won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races.

Spelling bee entries sought

BOUNTIFUL -- All elementary and junior high schools are invited to participate in the 2007 Davis County Spelling Bee. For the first time ever, plans include sending the winning speller from Davis County directly to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The event is co-sponsored by the Davis County Clipper and the Davis County PTA Councils.

Schools wishing to participate must hold class spelling bees followed by a school-wide spelling bee to determine those moving on the county competition.

The deadline for completing school-wide spelling bees is Feb. 1, 2007. That will be followed by semi-final spelling bees -- one in North Davis and another in South Davis -- during February.

The Davis County Spelling Bee will take place in mid-March, and the winner will be sent to the National Spelling Bee, May 27-June 1.

While the rules will be adjusted to fit the number of schools participating, current plans call for the top spellers from each elementary school to meet in the above mentioned semi-final competition. Approximately 15 spellers from each semi-final event will be chosen to attend the Davis County Spelling Bee, totalling about 30 elementary-age spellers. Another 30 spellers will be selected from among the county's junior high schools.

Charter and private school students are encouraged to participate but must be sponsored by their schools.

Detailed information has been sent to all area schools. For questions or additional information, call Sydney King, Davis South Council PTA, 801-232-8476. Or reach her by e-mail at sydneyking@msn.com
