SANDY -- The Jordan lacrosse team had never lost their own tournament, the Beetdigger Classic. That all changed this weekend as the Bountiful Braves waltzed in and spoiled the host's party.

"It was nice to go there and knock them out," said Braves coach Marty Westcott. "The guys did a great job of playing together and getting the job done." Bountiful started off by defeating Copper Hills and Bingham before taking on the perennial power and favorite Jordan Beetdiggers.

"We didn't play great against the other teams, but against Jordan we did a great job," Westcott said.

After knocking Jordan out of a trip to the finals, 10-4, Bountiful finished their business by beating Bonneville in the finals, 9-8 in overtime.

In the overtime it was tournament MVP Tim Forsgren who scored the winning goal for the Braves.

The Bountiful midfielder finished the Bonneville game with three goals and two assists.

"Tim played great and helped carry the team," Westcott said. "It was a nice honor for him and for the team as a whole."

He had eight goals in the tournament.

"Honestly, we haven't reached our full potential as a team yet," Westcott said. "But we're getting there and I think winning this tournament is a pretty good indication of what we can do as a team."

While winning the Beetdigger Classic remains a highlight for the Braves, last week also had them beating Logan, 11-7 and Pleasant Grove 10-9.

"We're undefeated right now and that's nice for the kids because they are working hard," Westcott said. "But it's early in the season and there's plenty of more lacrosse to be played."

"We will take the wins," he said. "we're happy to win, but it's also nice when I can see the areas I know we can improve on."

Westcott also sees this year as wide open as far as the state competition is concerned.

"In the past it's always been about a team that had one or two great players being able to carry a team to a state title," he said. "I think the competition in the state is getting better and better as the interest in the sport continues to grow. This is going to make it more difficult for teams with those one or two players to win a state title. Teams are becoming much more balanced."

"The sport is one of the fastest growing sports in Utah and kids just love it."

It used to be that lacrosse was played primarily on the East coast and at prep schools and boarding schools. Today lacrosse is played on the high school level, either as a recognized varsity sport or as a club (as in Utah) in every state.

The undefeated Braves will take on Juan Diego Wednesday and Alta next Monday.
