As part of the Gold Medal School Program, students at Eagle Bay Elementary School made it a goal to walk or run to Madrid -- a total of 5,252 miles.
The students walked or ran during their own time, including recess -- without having to be pushed by teachers or parents.
"The kids walked their miles during recess, so it was all up to them if they chose to do it or not," said Megan Bassett of Gold Medal Schools.
In return for their efforts, the students received a visit from Real Salt Lake player Joey Worthen and Leo the Lion, Real's mascot.
During the assembly, Worthen told the kids how it was his dream to play soccer professionally and of the importance of keeping his body healthy to make that dream become a reality.
Worthen then ran laps with the students, signed autographs and talked personally with interested students.
"The kids did such a good job achieving their goal with all the miles they walked," said Bassett. "They have made some great 'healthy' choices."
