SYRACUSE — Up to 1,200 jobs could be created by a new 215 acre industrial park recently announced in Syracuse.

The Ninigret Group, L.C. has informed city officials it intends to purchase the property adjacent to the future State Route 193 expansion area.

It would create the first “employment center” for the city which, decades ago, was known as the home of farms and R C Willey Home Furnishings.

“The single greatest thing we can do for our businesses and residents is to ease the financial burden for the cost of city services by expanding the tax base,” said Mayor Jamie Nagle, who added, “I believe this development achieves this expansion.”

City officials said new revenues from the development can be used to fund road repairs and other vital city services.

The development will also provide the city and county with more higher-paying employment and creation of a commerce center.

The jobs created will be in many light industrial sectors, and could include technology, packaging and shipping, manufacturing and fabrication, and similar industries, city officials said.

“This development will be an invaluable nexus for local, national, and international retail and business opportunities,” said City Manager Robert Rice. “We have seen what Ninigret has done in Salt Lake County some 20-plus years ago converting farmland to a Class A business park and employment center.

“We look forward to the development as an enhancement to Syracuse as the Gateway to Antelope Island,” he said.

County officials are equally supportive.

“This is a great time for Davis County,” said County Commission Chair Louenda Downs.

“With acres of land throughout the county being developed for job centers we are pleased for growth. Our partnerships with the cities have proven fruitful in enhancing our opportunities. This region brings another opportunity for job creation and development to occur.”

The Ninigret Group is a multi-pronged real estate firm that includes development, construction, property management and real estate finance.

It is headquartered in Salt Lake City and New York City.

The company has developed and owned properties in Utah for more than 30 years.

That includes the Ninigret Park and Ninigret Technology Park, which combined cover nearly 600 acres and provides millions of square feet of Class A office and other space.

“These actions, on multiple levels throughout public and private sectors, answer Governor Herbert’s challenge to all Utahns to accelerate the creation of 100,000 jobs in 1,000 days,” said Spencer Eccles, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, who added, “This is a perfect example of the private sector doing what it does best – create jobs.”

The Syracuse project’s first phase will cover 75 acres.
