BOUNTIFUL — Members of the First Southern Baptist Church of Bountiful hope to point the way to Bethlehem this holiday season with a live nativity, beginning Sunday, Dec. 18-21 at the church, 696 N. 400 East.

This is the first year the congregation has put on a live nativity for the public. Bill Dotson, the church’s music minister, hopes community response is enough to make it a part of tradition within south Davis County.

“Rather than having a cantata or other musical program which few people attended, we thought we’d like to host something which would be more of a presence in the community,” Dotson said. “We’re hoping it’s a success.”

“The nativity will be set up at the back of the church, where the community can drive through if they choose,” said the Rev. Mike Pless, pastor of FSBCB.

There will be luminaries to light the way, and parking will be available for anyone who would like to walk up and take a closer look. For those folks, fire pits will be placed at intervals for people to stop and warm themselves.

Mary, Joseph and Jesus will be there, along with the three wisemen, shepherds and an angel.

There will also be live animals, a miniature donkey, a goat and a sheep.

Those attending will be offered refreshments — hot chocolate, spiced cider and cookies.

“Our emphasis will be on the way to Bethlehem, pointing people to the way He came,” Dotson said.
