Beloved husband, father and grandfather David Lee Tomlinson passed away December 14th, 2011 at Kaiser Hospital in San Diego, CA. He was born Oct. 26, 1929 in Hollywood, CA, the son of John Harrison Tomlinson and Anona Mae Clough. He grew up in California and Salt Lake City, UT graduating from East High School at age 16. After high school he moved to Portland , OR receiving a B.S. Degree in Business Administration at Lewis and Clark College. He worked hard andand also received his private pilots license. Flying became one of his many passions. During this time, he met his sweetheart Jeanine Zabelle were married Jan. 22, 1951 and sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Shortly after their marriage, he left to serve a full-time mission in Minnesota for the LDS church. Upon returning, David and Jeanine settled in Portland where he worked as an Accountant and Branch Manager from 1947-1955. He also served as a Captain and Chaplain in the Army Reserve Corp.
David established a very successful hardware distribution company AMWEST in 1957. During this time, he served as Bishop of the Seattle Third Ward for seven years. They had three children. Sadly, Jeanine became ill and passed away Jan 16, 1973. He then moved his family and business headquarters to Salt Lake City. There he met his sweetheart Susan Jacobson and were married in Dec. 17, 1977 and sealed in the Jordan River Temple. They had four more children and resided in Bountiful, Bluffdale and then Provo, Utah.
Possessing qualities of optimism and leadership, many sought him out as a dynamic leader. With commitment, he served in his community and state government. From 1975-1977 he continued his studies in political science at the Univ. of Utah. In 1979, he was elected Chairman of the Utah Delegation to the White House Conference on Small Business for Jimmy Carter, 1980 Pres.Utah Council of Small Business ,1981 appointed to U.S. Senate Small Business Advisory Council and Chairman of Small Business National Unity Council where he assisted in the passage of the bipartisan Economic Recovery program for Ronald Reagan. In 1982, he was appointed GOP Platform Committee Chairman and from 1983-86 he served two terms in the State House of Representatives District 44. From 1986-87, he also dedicated his time serving as President of the Utah Pilots Association. He continued working in state government, church callings including the High Council at BYU and then business until retirement.
Our gentle, so kind and loving “Papa Dave” always brought the sunshine to every family get together. He loved his children and spent much of his time involved in their church activities, scouting, talent programs, and boating at Lake Powell. Music was another passion where he loved to play the piano and accordion, sing in choirs and with the family.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan: Sons: Steve Tomlinson (Karma), Jonathan Tomlinson (Shiloh), and Jesse Tomlinson; Daughters Susan Thomas (Glenn), Sandi Cox (Bill), Jenny Spencer (Jake), and Josie Gentry (Cameron), 23 grandchildren, 6 great -grandchildren: Sisters: Carol Tavarez and Lynda Ashley. Preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Ray Tomlinson. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, at Sundberg Olpin Mortuary, 495 So.State St., Orem, UT 84058. The viewing will take place from 11:30-12:45 prior to services and Interment at Orem City Cemetery, 1520 No. 800 E., Orem, UT following services.
