Once the tournament was over, the Darts found themselves with a pair of losses and an early exit, as the team from Denver, Colo. took down the Darts 58-54 during Saturday’s action at Orem High School.
“We know that a couple of the teams entering the tournament are going to be tough,” said Darts coach Jay Welk after the team’s win over Cottonwood last Tuesday. “A few of those out-of-state teams are state champions in their class, so we know what we’re stepping into before we hit the floor.”
On Thursday against Mountain View, Ariz., the Darts were able to build a commanding lead entering the fourth quarter of play before the Arizona team was able to mount a comeback.
Led by Abel Porter, Cole Hally and Tyson Denney, Davis scored at least 15 points in each quarter while taking a 15-point lead entering the final quarter. And even though Mountain View scored 24 in the fourth, it still wasn’t enough to overtake the Darts that night.
Friday, however, became a different story for Davis. In the Darts’ game against West Jordan, Davis was outscored in every quarter except the fourth as they fell 67-52. Unlike the team’s opening game, the defense for Davis allowed at least 17 points in each of the first three quarters of play, and found themselves behind by 17 entering the final period.
They outscored West Jordan by just a bucket and took the first loss. Denney was the team’s leading scorer in that game with 16 points and four rebounds.
The Darts were officially gone from the Shootout after suffering a tough 58-54 loss to the Colorado team. In a tightly contested game throughout, the Darts erased an eight-point first quarter deficit to trail by just two points at the half. After barely outscoring Denver East 18-17 in the third, the Darts were outscored 17-14 in the closing quarter to finish with a pair of losses.
In that game, three Darts scored in double figures including Josh Feigelson (10), Lincoln Holt (10) and Nate Coleman (11).
The Darts’ next game is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 29 against Judge Memorial at home. Tip off is 7 p.m.
