Author K.C. Grant, author of “Abish: Daughter of God” and its sequel, is now exploring the world of modern Mexico with her latest book, “Venom.” Set in Mexico City, the book follows a young woman who finds that she’s wandered into a web of mystery and trouble caused by the drug trade.
“I hope that when people read it they get a feel for how beautiful it is in Mexico, but also how the drug issue is starting to deteriorate the fabric and culture of the area,” said Grant. “There’s a real clash.”
The book, which includes strange accidents, kidnappings, an evil crime boss and even some romance, is planned as the start of a series. All of the books will feature Samantha Evans, the protagonist of the first book.
“She’s kind of quirky and a little bit naive, but very good-spirited,” said Grant of her character. “It tends to be her nature to see the best in people.”
And, as is an important habit for any protagonist, she has a tendency of getting involved in situations that end up causing trouble.
“She tries to help, but it inevitably goes awry,” said Grant.
The later books will also deal with different aspects of the drug trade, with the second book heading north to the our country’s other border to find new challenges.
“People aren’t as familiar with it, but the Canadian border also has a surprising number of issues,” said Grant. “The people stationed at the Canadian border are more likely to encounter terrorist activities.
“It’s so beautiful up there, that it’s a shame things like that go on.”
It does mean, though, that Grant and Samantha Evans will have plenty more stories to tell.
