“This is the highlight of their year,” said Elaine Gardner, site coordinator for the class. “The week after last year’s show, they asked us what we would be doing the next year.”
Students have been working for weeks on the original production, which was written with input from students and will be performed with the help of Woods Cross High students.
“Bringing the talents of these two groups together is an unforgettable, and often unpredictable, experience for everyone,” said Deborah Bowman, a parent who helped establish the class.
Campus Club is an afternoon program for youth and adults with special needs, providing educational opportunities and social interaction after they leave the public school system.
“It means everything to them,” said Gardner, of the classes, that cover topics from positive thinking and money management to computer skills and the sciences.
Besides class fees, the yearly musical production is necessary to help fund the twice-weekly classes. An oral auction held between acts augments the money raised by tickets as well.
This year’s auction will include ski passes to Deer Valley and a night at Stein Eriksen Lodge.
“Our program depends upon the generous support of donors,” said Bowman, who also credited the work of Janet Cook and Julie Hilton of the Woods Cross drama department, without whom, “we simply couldn’t do this,” she said.
“It is touching to see our Campus Clubs students shine with the support of the high school participants,” said Bowman.
This year’s performance takes place in Woods Cross High’s little theater on Friday, March 23, beginning at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 per person or $25 per family. Students can attend for $8 and children for $5. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from Top Hat Video in Bountiful.
