BOUNTIFUL — A drier-than-normal winter and warmer temperatures expected have fire officials urging residents “to be as fire prevention-minded as they can.”

South Davis Metro Fire Agency Chief Jim Rampton said fire agencies along the Wasatch Front are already responding to grass fires. “As you drive along, you may see spots along the side of the road that have already been burned,” he said.

Trying to predict a fire season can be a “funny thing,” Rampton said. Years there have been heavy snowfall and wet springs, people worry that the overgrowth of vegetation, especially in the urban/wildland interface, will mean a bad fire year when temperatures warm.

But in dry years, people worry the vegetation that is there is dry as kindling and will easily ignite come summer.
