And although they were able to take down the Lady Wolverines 8-4, Viewmont would have to settle for a tie for the Region 2 title and will be the No. 2 seed heading into Tuesday’s opening round of the 5A softball playoffs.
In the Lady Vikes’ win, Eliza Thornley helped Viewmont’s cause both at the plate and inside the circle, picking up the win while hitting a double and a triple at the plate. The Lady Vikings backed Thornley’s efforts by scoring three runs in the first three innings to take the early lead, but found themselves tied at 4-4 after Hunter scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Viewmont responded with three runs in their half of the sixth and one more run in the seventh while shutting the door on Hunter’s offense the final two innings to get the win.
For Thornley, her win inside the circle was her 12th of the season. She’s also tied for the team lead in doubles (seven with Emily Robb) and leads the team in triples (four). Overall the Lady Vikings won their 13th game of the season and were 9-1 in Region 2.
The Lady Vikings will open the 5A softball playoffs against Lehi, the No. 3 seed from Region 4. That game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 at 4 p.m.
