SANDY — Mitch Parkinson’s “chip shot” style of scoring had been a concern of Davis boys’ soccer coach Souli Phongsavath.

So much of a concern, in fact, that Phongsavath told the junior to take it out of his game completely.

But in the 44th minute of last Thursday’s 5A state boys’ soccer final, Parkinson’s “chip shot” over Brighton goal keeper Kolton Savage essentially proved to be the game winner as the Darts beat the Bengals 1-0 to claim their second state boys’ soccer title in three years.

“I actually told him to take it out of his game,” said Phongsavath. “The funny thing about that goal was that I yelled at him for about 20 minutes and basically said he needed to throw that chip (shot) out of his game.”

Parkinson’s goal, which was set up by a great pass from teammate Devin Farnes, followed only a few opportunities Davis had in the first half to take the lead as both teams played mostly in the middle of the field for the first 40 minutes of the game.
