Water levels are so low that “storage” usually not tapped until August is already in use.

“The reservoirs looked pretty darn good but they’re coming down (in water levels),” said Tage Flint, Weber Basin Water Conservancy District general manager Tuesday afternoon.

“We’ve been pulling from storage really heavily. For a normal (water) year we’re about six weeks early” to be at that stage, he said.

“We’ve been going on four weeks now” as far as pulling water from the system’s reservoirs, Flint said, adding, “That shows how little runoff we had.”

During an average year, there would still be snow pack melting off which would allow users to take advantage of the natural stream flows, he said.

“We would not need to use water in the reservoirs, normally, until the end of June or the start of July,” or about this time of year, Flint said.

However, even though storage is already being tapped, that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be adequate water to meet needs, he emphasized.

“There certainly should be enough for this year,” Flint said. “But as soon as the reservoirs cumulatively get to half (full), then we’re into next year’s storage.”

Weber Basin’s reservoirs are designed to handle enough water for two years, if need be.
