Merlene B. Putnam passed away on June 28, 2012 near Montpelier, Idaho. Born July 8, 1940, she was the daughter of Max A. and Cleo B. Brown of Bountiful, Utah, where she lived until 1996. Thereafter she, together with Paul K. Putnam, her husband of nearly fifty years, split their residence between Laketown, Utah and Sun City, Arizona.
After graduating from Bountiful High School and the University of Utah, Merlene taught Physical Education at Bountiful Junior High School from 1962 to 1968. For many years, she was active in Bountiful’s chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA). She was a local coordinator for many years of the ALA’s Girls State program, which teaches high school-age young women techniques of engaged citizenship in state and local affairs, and was, for one year, the program’s state-wide Director.
As a resident of Sun City, she became an avid fan of Lawn Bowling, competing (and winning) in dozens of tournaments over the years. She also contributed to this activity in several organizational capacities, and served as President of the Fairway Lawn Bowling Association. She was especially skilled at toll painting, all manner of games, painting and she loved the musical theater.
She is survived by her husband Paul, her brother, Craig Brown, her two children, Tonya L. Putnam (Mor Naaman) of New York City, and Vaughn Paul Putnam of Denver, Colorado, and four grandchildren, Ashley Putnam, Joshua Putnam, Amber Putnam, and Elai Putnam Naaman.
