A NEW HIGH SCHOOL Mountain Biking League has made its way into the state of Utah, with a team already being formed from an allotment of Davis County high school students. Currently there are 32 fully-fledged teams already formed, including one in Davis County that will involve most of the south Davis County high schools.

The High School Mountain Biking League has seen initial participation numbers increase as the sport nears the beginning of its inaugural season. The league is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Alliance (NCIA) and has over 300 students from 30 high schools inUtah, including Viewmont, Bountiful, Woods Cross and Davis High Schools.
“The beauty of the program is that no one rides the bench, everyone rides a bike,” said Utah High School Cycling League Director Lori Harward. “We’ve seen so much enthusiasm from kids, coaches, teachers and parents it’s amazing. And not only are these students getting on bikes, but other leagues have seen huge rates of fathers and mothers of these kids take up cycling.”
With enough participation in south Davis County, the three high schools of Viewmont, Woods Cross and Bountiful are likely to team up athletes in order to make a single team. This is similar to the DCI hockey team, which has members from Woods Cross, Bountiful, Syracuse, Layton and Clearfield high schools participating on a single team.
So far, the league has been noticed by not only the athletes, but the parents as well. A silent auction was held in early June with some success, and sponsorships and other donations have also helped push the league into the forefront of high school sports.
