DAVIS COUNTY — For Davis County residents who want to get away for the holiday weekend and are heading east, Flaming Gorge will have a viewing opportunity waiting for them.

On Saturday, July 7 at the reservoir, osprey will be flying during the 13th annual “Flaming Gorge Osprey Watch.” It has been gaining popularity in recent years as the timing of the event has gotten better.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. until12 p.m. at the peninsula next to the visitor center parking lot at Flaming Gorge dam. Flaming Gorge is located in the northeast corner of Utah, close to the Wyoming border. Ron Stewart, regional conservation outreach manager, said the best time for the viewing is in the morning due to the bird’s activity.

“The birds are usually more active early, before it gets hot and before the wind starts to blow in the afternoon,” he said. “Osprey are usually visible all morning, which gives us an opportunity to introduce visitors to these unusual birds of prey. It’s also fun to talk with viewers who know ospreys well and hear their stories about ospreys from other areas.”

The location is also important, said Stewart, due to the birds returning to Flaming Gorge every year in order to breed and raise their young.
