SALT LAKE CITY — The end of a season typically puts an end to a sport until the following school year.

But for a few sports such as high school hockey, the competition continues throughout summer months long after the final playoff games of the official winter season.

The summer high school hockey league has been in full swing for the past two months with teams from south Davis County taking the ice against other high school teams around Utah

The summer league, which typically crowns a champion by mid-August, plays at Salt Lake City’s Sports Complex weekly basis.

Viewmont High School, Davis High School and a Davis County Independent (DCI) team continue to lace up their skates in Salt Lake City.

Viewmont, the summer league champions and winners in three of the past four summer hockey league seasons, is split into two teams this summer with one playing in each conference, East and West.

Viewmont is in third place with a 3-3 record after dropping to Park City I 8-0. DCI and Davis, also which are in the same conference as Viewmont I, are behind the Vikings with records of 2-4 and 2-3, respectively. Davis’s last game ended with a 2-1 victory over Alta, while DCI dropped a close game to Skyline 5-4 in its last game.

Fairing slightly better than their brothers in arms is the Viewmont II team, which sits in the East Conference with Judge Memorial High School, Murray High School, and the Salt Lake Independent and Weber County Independent teams. Five other teams make up the 11-team conference.

Viewmont II also has had one of the best defenses during the summer season, allowing only eight goals so far.

The Northridge Knights are tied for the lead in the West Conference with a 5-0-1 record. Skyline shares the same record as the Knights, having scored 68 goals in six games. The team leads the league with a goal differential of plus-59.

The summer hockey season will wrap up with the top six teams in each conference heading into an upper playoff bracket. The bottom five will compete in a lower-bracketed playoff. The playoffs are single elimination only.

The latest standings show DCI and Davis two points behind Viewmont I. Viewmont and Park City I are in the final two upper playoff bracket spots in the West Conference, but the regular season is not yet over.

Scores of games played the week of July 9 were not available by press time.
