While he emphasized that nothing is official until approved by the school board, he said the district is proceeding with plans to construct a new school that would accomodate continued growth in the student population of the area.
“We are moving forward with plans to start construction next spring and have the school ready to open in the fall of 2014,” he said.
At that time, he said, Foxboro Elementary would have 1,250 children enrolled. According to Principal Kevin Prusse, the school was originally built for fewer than 700 students.
The first step when enrollment increases is year-round school, according to Williams. That is going into effect at Foxboro this year (see accompanying story). While there are only three sixth-grade classes at Foxboro for the upcoming 2012-13 year, there are 10 kindergarten classes, indicating future enrollment growth.
The new school would be financed through a bond measure passed in 2009. That measure allowed for the construction of three new elementary schools. This would be the first of the three, said Williams.
