That’s the message of Katherine Nelson’s latest album, Born Brave, which will be released Aug. 1. The Kaysville-based singer/songwriter, who was also the lead in the 2008 movie “Emma Smith: My Story,” wanted her third album to celebrate how complex and challenging it is to be a woman.
“My whole goal with the album was to highlight who women are,” she said. “We carry the world on our shoulders, but we still have to nurture children and be someone men can look up to.”
The album specifically pays tribute to some of the women Nelson herself looks up to. She wrote her favorite song, “Soldier Girls,” with two of her sisters, and she considers the song to be a tribute to both them and their grandmother.
“They’re incredible women who have gone through a whole gamut of experiences,” she said.
There are also tributes to historical women in the album. “Virgin’s Lullaby” honors Mary, the mother of Jesus, and collaborator Jason Deere contributed a song inspired by Emma Smith.
“I feel strongly about representing the strength of generations of women,” said Nelson. “We have courage embedded in us from the women who came before, and in our hardest times we’re encouraged by these strong women who stand beside us.”
