WOODS CROSS — The search for a new boys’ basketball coach at Woods Cross High School is over.

Kasey Walkenhurst, a former high school basketball player at West Jordan High School, was recently introduced to the players as the new coach, taking over the position roughly four months after the release of Todd Street.

“We’re very excited to have him here,” said Rick Winder, athletic director. “He’ll be a teacher on the staff and he brings a lot of basketball knowledge to our school.”

Walkenhurst played varsity basketball for three years at West Jordan High School and was a two-year starter for the Jaguars. After graduating from high school, Walkenhurst earned an academic scholarship to Salt Lake Community College, then received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and history at Weber State University.

According to a blog set up for the Wildcats’ boys’ basketball team, Walkenhurst began his coaching career where he graduated, at West Jordan High School. There, Walkenhurst was an assistant coach for the Jaguars for eight seasons, helping to guide the team to a pair of state championship game appearances and winning a 5A state title in 2009.

Winder said the biggest reason for choosing Walkenhurst was his spark, adding that Walkenhurst “showed he has great leadership and ideas that the team will need” for the upcoming season.

“The kids have already taken to him very well,” Winder said. “The most impressive thing about him was his interviews. He just showed that he has an amazing mind for the game, and we heard a lot of great things about him before he came in.”
