Bountiful High senior shines at tourney

BOUNTIFUL — Ricky Medrano is starting to make the most of his summer baseball opportunities.

The soon-to-be Bountiful High School senior was named the Ogden Wood Bat Classic tournament MVP after hitting for a .667 batting average with a .733 on-base percentage. Medrano topped his overall performance off by allowing just three hits and one earned run on the mound as his team finished with a 3-5 record during tournament play.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Medrano. “We played against a lot of tough teams and some really good players. It was a good tournament for me, too.”

The tournament itself featured six teams with two from the Salt Lake City area, where Medrano currently plays. Medrano’s team, called the Salt Lake Gulls, was split into a red and blue team for the tournament, and most of the games were played at Ogden’s Lindquist Field. Medrano’s red team finished in third place while the blue team finished in first place.

“It was the only tournament in the state for the travel teams, so the competition was tough,” said Medrano. “We played well as a team even though we finished (in) third (place).”
