Farmington resident Angie Winegar will spend her evenings as part of one of the casts for Hale Centre Theatre’s “9 to 5,” running Aug. 15 through Sept. 29. This is the regional premiere for the musical, which is based on the well-known 1980 movie about three women getting revenge on their boss.
“I play the Dolly Parton character,” said Winegar. “I’ve been a country singer since I was a teen, and I’m so excited to be able to do that on stage. It’s not a chance you get very frequently in a Broadway play.”
Winegar is only one of the Davis County residents taking part in the play. The show also includes Layton resident Bonnie Whitlock as Violent Newstead, North Salt Lake resident Brittany Bowman as Maria and several locals in the ensemble.
Winegar has been onstage since she was 14, having performed in CenterPoint Legacy Theatre’s “Sleepy Hollow” as well as a few productions at the old Rodgers Memorial Theatre.
Even with that experience, it took her a little time to get used to the theater-in-the-round format used at Hale.
“The director had to keep reminding me to just act more natural,” she said with a laugh. “With normal stages you have to always worry about angles, but at Hale you can move in any direction.”
Despite the freedom, the format has its own challenges.
“You have to be careful, because the audience is always three feet away from you,” she said. “You always have to be in character, because people can see when you’re not.”
