WOODS CROSS С  A college student from Woods Cross was killed while camping in the San Juan National Forest near Durango, Colo., last weekend.

The body of David Alan Jones was found early Saturday morning with an apparent gunshot wound,  according to a news release from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities took Brenden Dow Ashburn, 37, of Durango, into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder, the press release states. A handgun believed to be used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.

Ashburn made his initial court appearance Tuesday in the La Plata County Court. He is being held without bail. The Durango Herald is reporting that Ashburn could face the death penalty.

Jones’ family released a statement to the Clipper Wednesday.

“We were extremely shocked and saddened to learn of David’s tragic and seemingly senseless death over this past weekend in Colorado,” it said. “He was an extraordinary person who touched the lives of all those that he came in contact with.”

It went on to express gratitude for those in the community who have reached out to the family.

“He will be missed but our faith in Christ and in His plan for us will help us through this trying time.”

Jones was a student at Fort Lewis College in Durango, where he was majoring in both philosophy and accounting, according to the college. He graduated from Woods Cross High School in 2004.

Sheriff’s deputies found Jones’ body following a 911 call at about 2 a.m. on Saturday. The department’s press release said that Jones was camping with a friend in an area popular with outdoor enthusiasts.

However, La Plata County Sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender said Jones and the suspect were apparently not camping together, nor did they know each other.

The shooting remains under investigation.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to an account at America First Credit Union that has been set up in David’s name to help pay for funeral expenses.
