SALT LAKE CITY Р It takes all kinds of voices to make a choir.
The Salt Lake Children’s Choir is currently holding auditions for new members ages 8-15, and director Ralph Woodward is hoping to find Davis County youth ready to start a lifetime of loving music.
“I want to open the door to natural, free, beautiful singing,” said Woodward. “Music should be a wonderful, liberating thing, but it can be very confining if they try to sing in a proscribed way.”
In order to encourage this liberation, Woodward doesn’t require auditioners to have any musical training. Though some instrumental experience can give kids some helpful groundwork in listening to and reading music, he actually prefers that those auditioning not have any vocal training.
“That can result in voices that are a little unnatural, with the children forcing their voices,” said Woodward. “We try to help them find their natural voice.”
The auditions are about 15 minutes long, and Woodward asks that children not come with any prepared music.
“I don’t want them to practice too much or to be too worried,” he said. “I’m mostly looking for potential.”
Those interested in having their children audition for the chorus are asked to immediately call 801-537-1412 to schedule an audition time.
