BOUNTIFUL С  You can help one local family bring their little girl home.

Woods Cross residents Drew and Erin Yeates have adopted a little girl named Mabel from Ethiopia. It’s their second attempt after a failed adoption earlier this year. The earlier, reversed adoption has wiped the family out financially, and a fundraiser on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Creative Arts Academy in Bountiful will help them afford one more trip to Africa to bring Mabel home.

“It’s been quite a journey,” said Erin Yeates. “Honestly, that extra trip just depleted everything. We’d like to be able to pay for the airfare to get us there.”

The fundraiser event, which will include a bounce house, a silent auction, face painting and several vendors, was the brainchild of Erin’s eight-year-old nephew.

“He knew everything we’d been through, and he told his mom ‘Why don’t we do a fundraiser to help them out?’” she said. “My sisters and mom really got on board, but he was the one who started it all.”

The Yeateses, who have a six-year-old biological daughter named Olive, had talked about adoption since before they were married. They started the process in 2010 by submitting a request to Children’s House International, a group that tries to match Ethiopian orphans with prospective families. The group sends referrals to would-be parents.

“There was so many reasons we decided to adopt,” said Yeates. “It just felt like the right thing to do for our family.”
